When coming up with action poses, first think about the types of things your character will do in the story. Use that as a basis for determining the action poses to draw. If you use photo references, be aware that you will need to exaggerate the pose to make it dynamic. Copying a pose verbatim from a photo will result in a drawing that looks flat, and lacks energy.
Below are some action poses I created for Blackbeard. Work out the mechanics of the pose without concern for detail at this stage.
As you can see – all my pencil sketches are extremely rough. If I am happy with the pose, then I will continue further. Otherwise, I can ditch the sketch and move on to another.
Don’t be afraid to vary the poses, by showing the character from a different angle, as the shot below shows:
